Koning Electrical has restored our faith in tradespeople.
With the ongoing energy crisis, we thought it would be a good idea to ensure our customers are educated on how to really save energy. There are lots of things you can do to bring the cost of your energy bills down, big, and small.
Let’s start with the small things…
During the winter central heating is a must and normally as soon as we get home, we turn the thermostat up high. However, if you’re looking to save some money, you’d be surprised that by turning down your thermostat a degree or two could save around 10% on your heating bill!
Another hot debate around heating is whether you should leave it on low all day or only turn it on when needed. Well, according to the energy saving trust it’s simply a myth that it costs more to keep turning it on and off. It is indeed best to only use your heating when your cold or even use a timer to ensure it comes on when you want it to. It will save more energy in the long run which of course saves you money too.
One last thing to consider on the topic of heating is if you only really use one or two rooms in your home then it’s not worth heating the whole room. By turning the radiators off in rooms that aren’t in use as much you will be saving quite a significant amount of energy.
Moving on from heating, let’s talk washing…it is suggested that doing bigger loads of washing less often is the way to go. You should also use eco or cooler settings on your washing machine to save energy. By using cooler temperatures and washing one or two less loads a week this could save you around £30 to £40 a year. A tumble-dryer is one of the most expensive home appliances to run so if you need to use it ensure its fully loaded. If you stop using it completely it could save you around £70 a year!
Everyone’s favourite, a cuppa. But how many are you making? The more you use your kettle the more energy. Only boil as much as you need, and you could even pour the rest in a flask to use for your next one.
Now onto bigger things…
Switching to LED lights – this would require a cost initially, but LED lights can save you a huge amount in the long run. On average one LED bulb uses 80-90% less energy than traditional halogen bulbs. Each LED bulb could save you £35 a year, imagine the saving when upgrading your whole house!
Replacing old appliances – if you have a very old kettle or washing machine it might be worth making the initial investment of buying a new one as it will save you money in the long run. However just make sure you check the appliances energy rating beforehand, A&B grades are the best.
